I have spent a lot of time over the past year writing about what is happening in this country, documenting it, sourcing it, naming it clearly and with verified facts, and sometimes I backslide and start writing at people who are never going to hear me. Once in a while, I let my frustration with those people bleed into my thoughts and my work. That is not what I set out to do, and it is not what actually changes things.
So this week I am calling out the three groups of people who exist in any political or cultural conversation right now, being real about which I can actually reach, and recommitting to why I started this brand in the first place.
The first group already sees it. They have done the reading, lived experiences, felt this shit in their body before they had words for it. They are exhausted and sometimes isolated, and they have probably been called too sensitive or too political or too much by someone they love. What they need is to feel less alone, to have language for what they are already living, and to feel connected to something larger than their own private frustration. This is the group I most want to reach, because I am in it.
The second group is in the middle. They are paying attention but confused, or they are just starting to wake up to something they sensed but could not name, or they are people who grew up inside a framework that is starting to show its cracks. They do not need to be yelled at. They need a door, not a wall. Someone to name things clearly without making them feel stupid for not having seen it sooner. If we get the tone right, this is the group we can actually take somewhere.
The third group has decided. They are not confused. They are committed, at a level of identity, to not seeing what is in front of them, and no amount of documentation or evidence is going to move them because the belief was never based on evidence in the first place. Every hour spent trying to reach this group is an hour not spent on the first two. I don’t have the desire or energy to spend time there.
The research is clear on this. Motivated reasoning is most resistant to outside correction. The most effective shifts in belief happen when someone inside a community speaks, not when someone outside it argues. The people in group three are not going to be moved by me, and that is not my job.
I know these first two groups are larger than noise suggests. The people who are already awake and the people who are waking up outnumber the people who have decided, even when the algorithms and the news cycle make it feel the other way around. The loudest voices are not the most numerous. They are just the loudest.
I started this project because I believe that punk, grunge, and metal have always been about refusing to accept what you are handed without question. About calling out power. About community built on honesty rather than comfort. About supporting people who need it. That does not mean screaming into a void. It means finding the people who are ready to hear something true and saying it in a way they can actually receive it. Staying in the solution, not just naming the problem. Building something rather than just opposing something.
And if you are reading this, something brought you here. Maybe it is the music. Maybe it is the politics. Maybe it is the feeling that you have been seeing something clearly that the people around you refuse to see, and you needed to find out if anyone else sees it too.
That is what this is for. So here is what I am asking of both of us going forward.
Stay informed without drowning in it. Check your sources, say your piece, and then step away from the feed and do something for yourself.
Find your people and stay close to them. The community we build here and in our actual lives is not a comfort measure. It is infrastructure.
Stay in the solution. Name what is wrong, document it, refuse to normalize it, and then ask what you are going to do with that knowledge.
And keep going. Not because it is easy or because the results are immediate. Keep going because the world your kids are going to live in is being built right now. Because resistance is not a moment. It is an ongoing practice. For now. And I will be here doing the same thing. Let's keep building.
