Many of us experienced this past month as a blur, a continuous feed of alarming headlines that arrived faster than any of them could be fully processed, each one displaced by the next before the weight of it could settle. That is not an accident, and it is not new with this administration. The manufactured pace of crisis is one of the oldest tools in the authoritarian playbook, documented across regimes and decades by political scientists who study how power consolidates. Make everything urgent so that nothing gets the sustained attention it deserves. When everything is urgent, nothing is, and that gap is where accountability can disappear.
What you are feeling when July feels worse than June, and June felt worse than May, is not anxiety distorting your perception. It is accurate pattern recognition. The situation is genuinely escalating. The behavior is genuinely becoming less restrained. That is the documented trajectory of authoritarian consolidation, and naming it clearly is the first step toward responding to it effectively rather than simply absorbing it.
Social media platforms that give us real-time visibility into events that would previously have taken days to reach us are genuinely valuable, and the ability to see what's happening and share information across communities is part of what makes resistance possible at this scale. But the same platforms are algorithmically designed to promote emotionally charged, alarming content, which means continuous exposure doesn't make you better informed, it makes you more overwhelmed. Research published in peer-reviewed journals including Zenodo and ScienceDirect in 2025 and 2026 documents three specific mechanisms by which doomscrolling produces mental exhaustion: cognitive resource depletion from continuous processing of threatening information, emotional regulation breakdown from sustained exposure to distressing content, and attention fragmentation from the addictive design features of the platforms themselves. A 2025 PMC study found that approximately 52% of the information in the most viewed TikTok videos consists of misinformation. The visibility that social media provides is real. So is the misinformation it carries and the psychological cost of consuming it without limit.
Check your sources. Take care of your nervous system. Being informed is not the same as being saturated, and the distinction matters more right now than it ever has.
So let's slow it down. Here is what actually happened in July, stated clearly and without the cushioning of news cycle speed.
The war with Iran, which began on February 28, 2026 when the US and Israel launched nearly 900 strikes in 12 hours under the code name Operation Epic Fury, escalated dramatically in July. By the time the month ended, the US had conducted more than eleven consecutive nights of bombing campaigns against Iranian territory, targeting military infrastructure, bridges, railways, electrical systems, and energy sites. The strikes killed at least eight Iranian civilians in a single night when bridges and a maritime watchtower were hit. Iran's UN Ambassador reported that 1,332 Iranian civilians had been killed in the conflict since it began in February. The US carried out strikes near a nuclear power plant in Bushehr province. Oil prices topped $94 per barrel. The Strait of Hormuz remained effectively closed to commercial shipping. Iran struck US bases in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar in retaliation. Three American service members were killed. Twenty-nine more were wounded.
Peace talks that had been underway collapsed when Iran fired on vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran said was in direct response to US violations of a Memorandum of Understanding the two countries had reached. The US responded by bombing Iran. Iran retaliated. The cycle continued for eleven nights until a brief pause, after which the US launched what CENTCOM called a "heavy wave" of new strikes following further Iranian attacks on US forces in Jordan.
The American people were not asked about any of this. Congress was not consulted. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for an end to the conflict and said Democrats would force Republicans to vote on halting military operations. That vote has not happened.
On July 28, Donald Trump hosted Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Netanyahu has an active International Criminal Court arrest warrant against him for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, issued in November 2024. The United States is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, which is the legal basis for the ICC, but more than 120 countries are, and those countries are formally required to enforce the warrant if Netanyahu is on their territory. Several ICC member states, including Greece, Italy, and France, authorized his travel through their airspace to reach Washington.
Trump had already posted to Truth Social that Netanyahu "will under no circumstances be arrested as long as he is in the United States." He had already sanctioned the ICC itself in February 2025 in response to the warrant. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, speaking after the White House meeting, said the United States was "actively contributing to make the international criminal law architecture that it has been building, from the Nuremberg trials up until now, crumble on our head."
When asked by Sean Hannity whether he feared being arrested in a country that honors the ICC warrant, Netanyahu said he travels with Israeli special forces in case of emergency. He was in the Oval Office of the United States when he said it. A poll released this week found that by a 22-point margin, Americans believe Netanyahu should face arrest on US soil. The administration hosted him anyway.
On July 21, Trump signed three proclamations imposing 50% tariffs on a broad range of Canadian goods, invoking Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a provision that had not been used in decades. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on August 19. They cover dairy, honey, lumber, cement, alcohol, hockey sticks, essential oils, candles, and dozens of other categories. They exclude energy products and motor vehicles. Canada sends more than 75% of its exports to the United States. Desjardins, one of Canada's largest financial institutions, estimated the tariffs would impact approximately $28 billion Canadian in annual exports and shave two to three tenths of a percent off Canadian economic growth in both 2026 and 2027.
The administration framed the tariffs as a response to Canadian trade barriers on American autos, alcohol, and dairy. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney called the move damaging and said negotiations were ongoing. CNN noted the move sent a clear signal to every other US trading partner: "You could be next." The Supreme Court had struck down Trump's earlier sweeping tariffs under emergency powers earlier in 2026. The Section 338 authority the administration used instead has never been legally tested at this scale and is expected to face court challenges before the August 19 implementation date.
On July 24, the CDC announced that the United States had recorded 2,318 confirmed measles cases in 2026, surpassing the 2,289 cases reported in all of 2025, with more than five months remaining in the year. The last time measles cases were this high was 1991. The disease was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. The past 18 months have produced more measles cases than the previous 25 years combined. Seems worth mentioning that ninety-three percent of infections occurred among people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services, had halted federal funding for vaccine hesitancy research, downplayed the risks of measles in public statements, and spent his tenure spreading skepticism about vaccine safety while vaccine rates declined across the country. In April 2026, he told an interviewer that the US had done "better under my leadership than any country in the world in limiting measles." In July, when the record was broken, he defended his handling of the outbreak. The CDC has not had a permanent director for most of Trump's second term.
Simultaneously, more than 11,000 people across 41 states were sickened by a cyclospora outbreak linked directly to federal public health cuts that reduced the country's capacity to monitor and respond to foodborne illness. Former CDC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Debra Houry said the country was "not prepared for global health threats" under Kennedy's leadership and that public health in the United States was "at a tipping point."
These four things happened in a single month. The Iran war escalation that killed American soldiers and Iranian civilians. A president hosting a man with an active ICC war crimes warrant in the Oval Office and guaranteeing his protection. Tariffs on the closest ally the US has. A 35-year measles record broken by an HHS Secretary who spent his tenure undermining the vaccination infrastructure that had kept the disease eliminated for 26 years.
Each of these, in any previous administration, would have been the singular defining event of an entire year. All four arrived in July, alongside the Patriot Front march on the Capitol on the Fourth of July, the House passing the US-Israel military integration bill by four votes, and the Senate unanimously passing a bill opposing a pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell, which is its own sentence.
And the only antidote to any and all of this, is refusing to let any of it slide past without being named.
